Many say they wish they would have sought treatment sooner. Ingrown Toenails

If you have ever experienced an ingrown toenail, then you know that it can become very painful. It may become difficult for you to wear certain shoes or to walk or run comfortably. Sometimes, even pressure from bed sheets or socks can be painful! And, if not taken care of properly, it can become infected–requiring oral or intravenous antibiotics!

Some causes for your ingrown nail are:

  • Improper nail trimming
  • Shoes that are too tight
  • Rotated, contracted or deformed toes
  • An injury to a toenail
  • A deformed or fungal toenail

There is no reason for you to suffer from your ingrown toenail when it can be permanently corrected by Dr. Silver. This is a very quick, simple office procedure that can easily be done on the initial visit. This is what you can expect:

  • The corner of your nail is numbed with a cold spray and anesthetic
  • Once numbed, the ingrown portion of your nail is painlessly trimmed out of the skin
  • Next, the corner of the nail root is treated to prevent your nail from ingrowing again.
  • A small gauze dressing is then applied to your toe.
  • By the following day, you can remove this dressing off and get your toe wet.
  • Finally, apply a Band-Aid each day until the nail border has dried and scabbed over.

Many patients with ingrown toenails are often able to schedule an appointment with us the same day they call or the next.

Fungal Toenails

Not only can fungal toenails become horribly ugly but can they cause your toenails to become:

  • Thick, deformed, discolored, brittle
  • Painful
  • Detached from the nail bed
  • Ingrown
  • Difficult to trim
  • Destructive to your socks
  • Foul smelling

Fungal infections in toenails are caused by the same fungus that causes an athlete’s foot infection. This fungus is always lurking around our feet and will take any opportunity it can to infect a toenail. Unfortunately, once a toenail becomes infected with fungus it often gets worse over time, eating away at your healthy nails-often spreading to other toenails or even other members of your family. Toenail fungus can also be difficult to treat and no treatment can give you immunity to the fungus or prevent it from ever recurring-other than permanent toenail removal-which may occasionally be necessary.

Fortunately Dr. Silver can take care of your toenail fungus! He has various treatments available including:

  • Taking an oral antifungal medication,
  • Application of a topical antifungal medication,
  • Non-permanent removal of a nail then application of a topical antifungal as the nail regrows,
  • Periodic trimming and filing of your toenail in our office to keep them comfortable and under control,
  • Permanent removal of a terribly painful, deformed, fungal toenail.

Deformed Toenails

Deformed nails can become painful, quite ugly in appearance, and so thick that they can be very difficult for you to trim yourself. Not all deformed toenails are infected by a fungus, but if it is, getting rid of the fungus usually won’t change the growth of the nail very much.

A deformed toenail is often caused by injury to a nail. Another common cause is from abnormal pressure against a nail from a hammered, contracted, or rotated toe. Occasionally, a toenail on an older individual will be terribly deformed with no apparent cause.

A terribly deformed toenail may need to be permanently removed by Dr. Silver. This is a quick and simple office procedure that can be done on your initial visit. This procedure is very similar to that done for an ingrown toenail. The deformed nail will not regrow and you will often have just an outline of the toenail. For women, toenail polish will cover the area.

Many diabetic and elderly patients, especially those with poor circulation will have multiple toenails that are deformed and can’t even begin to take care of their own feet. They will often need to be seen every 2-4 months for professional trimming and filing of their toenails (along with any corns or calluses they may have).
