Ingrown Toenails

ingrown toenail

If you have ever experienced an ingrown toenail, then you know that it can become so painful that it’s difficult to wear certain shoes and can limit your activities. Even pressure from bed sheets can keep you up at night! Many have tried trimming out the ingrown border only to make it worse. If not taken care of properly, an ingrown toenail can become infected–requiring oral or intravenous antibiotics!

Some causes for your ingrown nail are: Improper nail trimming, shoes that are too tight, toes that are rotated, contracted or deformed, injury to a toenail, a deformed or fungal toenail.

There is no reason for you to suffer any longer from your ingrown toenail when it can be permanently corrected by Dr. Silver at the Westwood Foot Clinic in Golden Valley, MN with a quick, simple office procedure that can easily be done on your initial visit.

Many patients with ingrown toenails are often able to schedule same or next day appointments.

Toenail Fungus (aka Mycotic Nails)

toenail fungus

Not only can fungal toenails become painful, ugly and embarrassing but can become thick, discolored, deformed, brittle, foul smelling, detached from the nail bed, ingrown, infected, difficult to trim and can destroy socks or nylons.

Fungal infections in toenails are caused by the same fungus that causes an athlete’s foot infection. This fungus is always lurking around our feet and will take any opportunity it can to infect a toenail. Unfortunately, once a toenail becomes infected with fungus it often gets worse over time, eating away at your healthy nails, often spreading to other toenails or even other family members. Toenail fungus can also be difficult to treat and no treatment can give you immunity to the fungus or prevent it from ever recurring, other than permanent toenail removal, which is sometimes necessary.
Fortunately Dr. Silver can treat your toenail fungus! He has various treatments available including:

• Taking an oral antifungal medication,
• Application of a special prescription topical antifungal medication,
• Non-permanent removal of a nail then application of a topical antifungal as the nail regrows,
• Periodic trimming and filing of your toenail in our office to keep them comfortable and under control,
• Permanent removal of a terribly painful, deformed, fungal toenail.

If you are having problems with toenail fungus then an appointment is necessary with Dr. Silver at the Westwood Foot Clinic in Golden Valley, MN to determine the ideal treatment to get your toenails looking and feeling healthy again.

Deformed Toenails

Deformed nails can be painful, ugly and embarrassing. They can become so thick that they are difficult or impossible to trim yourself. A deformed toenail is often caused by an injury to the nail or from pressure against the nail from a toe that has become bent, contracted or rotated.

A thick, deformed toenail often needs to be permanently removed. This is a simple office procedure that can be done on your initial visit. Once healed, there may be a thin layer of skin that looks quite normal with just an outline of the toenail. This can then be covered with toenail polish if desired.

Many diabetic and elderly patients, especially those with poor circulation often have very thick and deformed toenails that they or family members are not able to trim. These nails can not only become painful, but become a source for sores, ulcerations or infection. If health and/or circulation problems prevent permanent removal of a deformed toenail, then we can provide professional toenail trimming and filing (palliative foot care), typically on a regular 2-4 month cycle and often covered by insurance.

If you are having problems with deformed toenails then an appointment is necessary with Dr. Silver at the Westwood Foot Clinic in Golden Valley, MN to determine the ideal treatment to get your toenails looking and feeling healthy again.
